How To Make A Simple T-Shirt With The Sims 2 Body Shop

Step 1 - Making New Clothes Is Easy!

Everyone wants to make new clothes for their Sims and The Sims 2 Body Shop makes it easy to create and test your new creations quickly! Before we get started, you should make sure you have a picture editor like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro as you will need a program like this to edit images.

Step 2 - Welcome To The Project Panel

The first step is to start a new project in The Sims 2 Body Shop. The Sims 2 Body Shop organizes your work into projects to make them easier to work with. To start a new project, do the following:

Click on 'Create Parts' in the upper right corner.
Click on 'Start New Project'
Click on 'Create Clothing'
Next choose a category for your new clothes, let's pick the 'Everyday' icon that looks like this:

TIP: You can find out what each button does by leaving your mouse pointer over each button and the name will appear after a moment.
You can also select who you want to make the clothing for; you can choose male or female, choose the age range and body type as well. For this demo I am using an adult female.
Once you have made your choice, we will need to choose what type of outfit we want to make. We can select one of the following: whole outfit, tops, or bottoms. For now, let's click the 'tops' icon that looks like this:

Click on the picture that most resembles the shirt you want to make. We can adjust the sleeves and other parts later so it doesn't have to be a perfect match. Once you have clicked on your template, you will see it appear on the mannequin to the left.

Now that you have made your selection we will need to export the textures to your project folder so we can work on them. Don't worry, The Sims 2 Body Shop makes this very easy! Click the 'Export Selected Textures' at the bottom of the screen, it looks like this:

Enter a name for your project, let's just call this one 'ExampleTShirt' and then click the 'Accept Project Name' checkmark at the bottom.

Step 3 - Alpha Beta Texture What?

Now the real fun starts! Open your favorite picture editor like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro and open the files you just exported. You should find your project at the location listed in the project panel screen.

Browse to that location and you should find 4 files in the Projects/ExampleTShirt folder. They should look something like this:

You will only need to edit 2 of these files:
The texture file: top~stdMatBaseTextureName.bmp
The alpha channel file: top~stdMatBaseTextureName_alpha.bmp

You should know a little about both of these files before you get started. The texture file is a flat picture that is wrapped around a Sim and is the file you will be doing most of your work on. Here is what a texture file will look like once you open it in your editing program:

The alpha channel file tells the graphic what to show and what not to show. Anything painted white will show up on your finished work, anything in black wont. Here is what a alpha channel file will look like once you open it in your editing program:

Ok..now let's add a design to our shirt.

Step 4 - Design On A Dime

I'm sure you're going to want to add a logo or some color to your shirt so let's give that a try next!

Once you have both of your images open to edit, let's look at the texture image and add a logo. I have opened a copy of The Sims 2 logo that I had lying around, you can use any image you want or maybe even create one from scratch. I reduced the size of the image and pasted it on the texture image. Once I saved the image it looked like this:

Now that the image is saved, let's go back to The Sims 2 Body Shop and click the 'Refresh Preview Sim' button. Spin the model around using the arrows at the bottom of the pedestal and VIOLA! Now we have a logo on the back of the shirt! How easy was that?
Step 5 - Quick Changes to Alpha

The alpha channel image will let you make some quick changes that will show up immediately. I used the eraser on the alpha image to add a frill to the bottom of the shirt.

Once you've made your changes on the alpha image and saved them, go back to The Sims 2 Body Shop and click the 'Refresh Preview Sim'   button and VIOLA! Your mannequin now has a shirt with frills at the bottom

It's not exactly the height of fashion but it's a good example of how quickly you can customize a piece of clothing using the alpha channel image.

Ok..let's finish this project!

Step 6 - Wrap It Up!

Once you're happy with your changes you can import your work directly to The Sims 2. Again, The Sims 2 Body Shop does all the work for you. Just click on the Import Textures Button at the bottom of the Project Panel and your files will be imported to the game for you.

Now that you know the basics of creating custom content, you can get started on your own designs! Have fun and get creative!

You're all done
